Up until last week I hadn’t the slightest idea what an area code look up tool was.
I had a strange call on my cell phone bill and I didn’t for the life of me recognize the area code. As usual I turned to the Internet. I did a general search for Area Code Lookup, and found the Verizon Area Cold Lookup tool.
The problem with most area code tools online is that they don’t work worldwide, meaning if you’re not too sure what country the area code is from, you may be out of luck.

The problem with most area code tools online is that they don’t work worldwide, meaning if you’re not too sure what country the area code is from, you may be out of luck.
I was looking up a 501 area code. On the Verizon site I had a choice I could input the area code itself or choose the State from a drop down menu. Again, if my area code happened to be Canadian my search would have turned up empty-handed.
My 501 area code ended up giving me a state where the caller is from – Arkansas - and a list of possible cities where my caller could reside: Benton, Conway, Hot Springs, Jacksonville, Little Rock, North Little Rock and Sherwood. From there I could devise from my list of known callers, who might have called me from Arkansas.
The Verizon area code lookup tool was great because it’s offered for free. With many of the other area code lookup tools you have to be a registered member or you have to pay a fee for the service. If you pay for the service, you end up getting a more thorough search area.
Now if you run a business and you’re looking up area codes all of the time then a paid service is probably worth it to you, but if you only look up the odd area code once in a while you might be wasting your money.
